Cyprus Port Authority (CPA) employees on Friday staged a two-hour strike over a disciplinary investigation against their SYALK union chief Demetris Patsalos.
Patsalos is being investigated for allegedly defaming the CPA through his correspondence, statements and articles concerning the call for tender on the pilot and towage service in Vassiliko.
While he was before a committee at 12pm, unions began their strike lasting two hours.
They reject the allegations against Patsallos saying his statements never defamed the CPA nor did it cause any problems to any companies concerned.
He was “acting in the capacity of union leader and is covered by the authority’s regulation number 53 that ensures trade union freedoms” they said.
Patsalos himself said the statements were not made as a CPA employee but as a union rep.
The committee investigating the allegations rescheduled for next week as the CPA chairman, who is a prosecution witness was not able to attend. They will convene again on June 1.
Earlier this week, a union general assembly called on the CPA’s board to clear Patsalos of all charges.
They said the union chief did not slander the authority, nor did his statements cause any problems to the companies he mentioned, as he had been acting in his capacity as union leader.
