An 80-year-old woman from Phini, in Limassol, died on Saturday evening after the car she was in, driven by her 82-year-old husband went off the road, falling seven metres into a ditch.
The accident happened when the couple were on their way to their orchard in Ayios Demetrios. The 82-year-old reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which went off the road, through the back yard of a weekend house, and plunged seven metres into a ditch.
Limassol traffic chief Emilios Kafas told the Cyprus News Agency that it appeared the woman was killed instantly, while her husband, who appeared to have gone into shock abandoned the car, and was found 1.5 kilometres away wandering around dazed and confused on Sunday morning.
Even though the accident occurred on Saturday evening, he said, it was only reported on Sunday morning by the owner of the house when he arrived and realised what had happened.
Once the husband had been located, both he and his deceased wife were transferred to Limassol hospital where the 80-year-old’s death was confirmed, while her husband was admitted and treated for hypothermia.
