A 25-year-old man was remanded in custody for eight days on Wednesday in connection with the killing last week in Limassol of a motorcycle gunman who was run down by the man whose home he targeted moments earlier.

Reports suggest he was stopped at Paphos airport from where he was planning to leave the country.

Following investigations, police secured testimony claiming the 25-year-old was in the car that hit and killed 40-year-old Andreas Stylianou, aka Americanos on December 7. The arrested man is a relative of the 31-year-old already detained for the premeditated murder of Stylianou, with police believing the suspect deliberately drove his car at the motorcycle which the gunman was riding.

Limassol CID with the use of sniffer dogs, earlier discovered two hand grenades in usable condition, buried in the ground in a plastic box about 150 metres from the victim’s house.

Police are conducting investigations to see whether the grenades have anything to do with the victim, something not as yet verified, given that they were not found in his home but in the wider area.

On the night of the killing officers rushed to the scene in the Apostolou Andrea Haraki area where they found Stylianou’s lifeless body lying in the road next to his motorcycle. A handgun and five cartridges were also discovered in the street.

The 31-year-old suspect was later arrested on suspicion that he had deliberately run down Americanos minutes after receiving death threats from the victim who had allegedly also later fired shots at his house.

The findings of a traffic police report pointed to the car having collided with the motorcycle and dragging it some ten metres. The report said the nature of the road, the path of the two vehicles and the speed at which they were travelling did not account for the severity of the collision.

Both men in the past were known to the police for drug-related cases.
