The fire services said on Sunday evening they were still battling a blaze in the Lofou area of Limassol that has so far burned 1.5 square kilometres of wild scrub, carob and olive trees.
Aerial support was withdrawn from the area when darkness fell, the fire service said, and would resume at first light, Some 25 fire trucks and vehicles from the game fund and forestry department were still in the area fighting the blaze on two fronts but being hampered by strong winds. The fire broke out at around 1.30pm.
As evening fell, firemen had to rescue three hunters who were traveling in two different vehicles and were trapped in a gorge surrounded by fire. Two hunters were rescued by firefighters from the Republic and the third by a firefighter from the British bases and was taken to hospital with breathing problems. The hunter’s car was destroyed by the fire.
A fire in the Parekklisia area, also in Limassol that broke out at 1.30pm on Sunday was brought under control around 6pm. In total, six hectares of wild scrub and vegetation were destroyed in Parekklisia. Firemen were to remain the area overnight to ensure the fires would not re-ignite.
