A gang of foreigners who recently arrived in Cyprus is suspected to be behind a number of burglaries that occurred in Limassol in the last few weeks.
“The target of burglars are mostly luxurious houses of foreigners in Cyprus, mainly Russians,” Limassol CID chief Yiannis Soteriades said on Monday. “A typical case is the burglary of a house in Yermasoyia belonging to a Russian which occurred 20 days ago where burglars stole very expensive watches and jewellery with a total value of €550,000 from a safe.”
Other burglaries worth tens of thousands of euros also occurred in the same area, he said, adding that police suspects a gang from abroad which focuses on luxury homes.
The CID chief urged the public to be very careful and take all appropriate measures to protect their property, as the summer season and holidays are ideal for burglars’ activities.
He advised people to lock up valuables, preferably in a safe which cannot be moved. In public people should carry a minimum of valuables and keep checking on them.
Residents who leave their homes for holidays should avoid leaving signs that they are absent from home and ask trusted neighbours to check on their houses at regular intervals.
