Two brothers were remanded for seven days by the Limassol district Court on Friday in connection with a shooting and stabbing incident that left one man in a critical condition in intensive care and two others injured.
Lawyers for the defendants did not object to the remand order though the brothers deny all accusations made by the police, saying only that they had been attacked by two brothers aged 24 and 30 and one of their 26-year old friends.
Speaking at the scene of the incident, home of the 38 and 40-year-old brothers in Monovolico area, Ioannis Soteriades of Limassol CID said that according to a witness statement, at around 11.30pm on Thursday night three men aged 25, 26 and 30 visited the brothers to discuss with one of them the harassment by him of a former girlfriend, now in a relationship with one of the three injured men.
Before the incident, the 24-year old fiancée and former girlfriend of one of the accused had visited the accused apparently demanding explanations as to why her former boyfriend had beaten up her current partner earlier that day.
According to witness statements the verbal altercation then escalated with the brothers producing a shotgun and knife and attacking the three youngsters, a shot being heard by neighbors.
One of the three victims managed to wrest the shotgun from the assailant and the three fled, going straight to Limassol general hospital for treatment to their injuries.
The 24-year-old was taken to the intensive care unit in critical condition caused by shotgun and knife injuries with the 26-year-old sustaining knife wounds to his face and other parts of his body, while the 30-year-old was treated for a large trauma to the back of his head and pellet wounds to various parts of his body.
Police sealed off the scene of the incident and suspects were arrested and taken in for questioning. Soteriades said the men were being investigated for attempted murder, causing injury and conspiracy to commit a crime.
The shotgun and various other items were collected from the scene to be taken for forensic tests.
The court heard that the three victims are also being investigated for possible illegal entry to the accused brothers’ house.
