Although not allowed to travel to Nicosia due to the restrictive measure in place against the spread of coronavirus, the Limassol branch of the small shopkeepers union (Povek) has expressed support for a demonstration outside the presidential palace on Wednesday to demand more support.

Povek’s Limassol branch said it firmly stands beside the thousands of small and medium size businesses in the Limassol district that are experiencing grave difficulties.

“These businesses need to be supported by the state in order to be able to pay their rents and repay their loans. It is a matter of paramount importance,” a statement released by Povek Limassol said.

It also added that shops operating in the city’s tourist area are the most affected by the restrictive measures in place. “State support is the only way in which these shops will survive the pandemic.

“We are therefore calling on the government to listen to the cry of agony of the thousands of small and medium-sized businesses and to take drastic measures to deal with a dangerous situation that will eventually put them out of business.

“We wish the people who will protest tomorrow in front of the presidential palace the very best. Their struggle is everyone’s struggle,” the union concluded.
