It’s officially winter, so for me comfort food with a touch of class and sophistication is a must, taking my mind straight to meat, and particularly steak, dishes. There is nothing better in the culinary world when it is done right and the Columbia Steakhouse has been doing right for quite some time.
Located right in the heart of old Limassol, Columbia Plaza is an imposing yet irresistibly charming building. Built to appeal to a contemporary aesthetic, it contrasts, but at the same time complements, its traditional surroundings. Although not the cheapest option for dining it is worth every cent spent there.
Walking in we were greeted with a smile and the hostess dutifully took us to our table. Reservations are always best for this restaurant, especially during the weekend as the Columbia Steakhouse’s generous helpings of steak make it a popular location.
The restaurant oozes class from every crook and cranny and glass walls were the preferred choice when construction was underway. At first the glass walls might seem invasive, and the thought of the passers-by ‘watching’ you while you eat might be unsettling but rest assured you see more of the passing person than he sees of you. The clever lighting and setup within the restaurant averts the gaze of the ‘outsider’.
Now, time to order. Ordering steak is a process that takes time and the waiter was patient and very helpful. He readily answered any questions we had about the menu, and did not hesitate to recommend some of his own dishes. A quality to be appreciated.
The menu is pretty straightforward; with starters, salads, pasta, steaks and specialties. However, choosing anything other than steak or meat takes away from the experience as their succulent steaks really should be enjoyed.
This time, really wanting to try something new as well as leaving room for steak we ordered a few main dishes rather than a starter. Thus the meal began with the new Iberico Pork Chops, made with smoked paprika, sided with potatoes, rocket, sweetcorn & red onion salad. The combination of the perfectly seared pork chops and the touch of spice from the paprika made this an unbeatable dish – other than an amazing steak I don’t know what could top it. The portion was quite appetizing – gourmet isn’t synonymous with meagre portions in this case.
We followed this with Black Angus, Prime New York Strip – it is worth mentioning that the Columbia Steakhouse prides itself in its Black Angus prime steak that is of ‘the highest standard’. And it does not fail to deliver. The steak was more than enough for one and the meat literally melted in the mouth. Is it possible to be cooked to perfection?
And with an extensive wine list to choose from the restaurant’s wine cellar your steak is sure to be complemented well.
All in all, the Columbia Steakhouse remains a front-runner for a fine dining experience in Limassol. It will not come cheap, but you will thoroughly enjoy every part of your meal. The atmosphere, the serene ambiance the restaurant exudes teamed with exceptional service and unforgettable food, makes Columbia Steakhouse highly recommended.
